The golden girl who inspires fellow women

ISP Delhi Bureau

India woke up to a new wrestling sensation this week with Babita Nagar winning wrestling gold in the World Police & Fire Games (WPFG2022) currently held in the port city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Fighting under the game’s motto of ‘in sport we unite’, Indian girl Babita fighting in the 68 kg category stunned everyone by defeating the Philippines player in the finals in 24 seconds.

More than 10,000 competitors from 70 different countries are participating in the WPFG2022. They are competing in 63 sports events including CrossFit, athletics, water polo, kite surfing and the ultimate firefighter to name a few.

Babita, hailing from the Sadullapur village in Greater Noida in the NCR region, is a hero of her place. She is the one working for the last decade training, inspiring and guiding women in her locality to train in self-defence and wrestling. More than 100 girls trained by Babita have got recruited into different police forces across the country. Babita has been a role model for many years. Her recent gold medal has only let her shine further in the world arena.

Despite local hurdles and strict opposition from the elders of the village, Babita with the support of her family set up an exclusive training centre for women in her village. While she began wrestling in 1999 and won the commonwealth games silver medal,  she got recruited into Delhi Police as Sub-Inspector through the sports quota in 2001.

She has played and won more than 30 international bouts. While Babita continued with her winning streak in the games, She inspired young girls and housewives in her village to take up self-defence and wrestling as a sport to keep themselves fit and energetic. Her training was free for everyone. Young girls were put through a strict regimen to qualify for entrance in police and paramilitary jobs with stringent physical training.

Babita’s victory in the Netherlands is slated to inspire and encourage many more girls to take up wrestling. She believes that a confident woman trained in self-defence and wrestling can not just earn for herself with a good job but also protect others in society. After her victory in the Police games, Babita in her message to her native village vowed to work with more strength and expand her work.

Greater Noida is eagerly waiting to welcome its hero back home later this week.
